The S/V Formidable is Massachusett’s very own Tall Ship designated as such by the venerable Tall Ships America Association. The Formidable is a brigantine, which refers to her rigging, and at 70 feet is most impressive indeed. She has been licensed by the USCG to carry 49 passengers. The Formidable is managed by the very able, experienced and affable Captain Russ and his dynamic crew; some of which have been known to break out in a sea shanty or two. Aboard the vessel is a ‘head’ or bathroom and a small space below decks for a few to get out of the sunshine if desired. Her crimson red sails are well known along the shores of Massachusetts, and beyond, harking back to the Days of Piracy from which her steel hull and iron rigging were inspired. On the main deck there is a large hatch cover that guests are free to use to set up a buffet from home and when coupled with a cooler of beverages makes for a splendid picnic at sea! There is something poetic, we believe, and most fitting, for one to witness the largest gathering of Tall Ships in Boston in almost 20 years from the deck of a tall ship itself! The S/V Formidable is a beamy (wide) and heavy vessel so there’s no need to be concerned about sea motion as she cruises smoothly across the inner harbor.
