What Is Sail Boston?

Sail Boston is a festival that will be taking place from Friday June 16th to Thursday, June 22nd of 2017. Boston will be the official -and ONLY- United States port for the tall ships. The 30-plus extraordinary ships participating in the international Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta will converge with the Tall Ships Challenge vessels sailing north from Charleston, South Carolina presenting an epoch parade of vessels to Boston’s locals and visitors not seen for 40 years.

What Is A Regatta?

A regatta is a name unique to the maritime world and suggests a race or competition. The Rendez-Vous regatta is a prestigious transatlantic race with more than 30 tall ships participating. Massive, historic sail vessels depart from the historic borough of Royal Greenwich located in UK and then continue to cruise along the choppy waters to the picturesque village of Sines, Portugal. Finally, the sturdy and steadfast ships will compete along the tropical seas of Bermuda until they finally arrive at the historical city of Boston. Once they have claimed their stay here, the tall ships will make their way up to Halifax and Quebec in Canada. The last leg of the regatta is when the tall ships depart from Quebec and race all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to Le Harve, France.

What Are Tall Ships?

During their stay here in Boston, organizers anticipate millions of spectators to converge along the waterfront to gaze upon these magnificent vessels. Only a lucky few will be able to witness them at anchorage, in the parade, or from seaward. Spectators can expect to see a vast variety of tall ships when they anchor in Boston. They range from massive fully-rigged ships, Barques, and Brigs to medium sized ships such as Three -Masted Schooners, Barquentines and Brigantines. Smaller vessels such as Two-Masted Schooners, Topsail Schooners and Ketches are also participants of Sail Boston. Sail Boston will collect the largest fleet of tall ships in the Boston Harbor since the year 1976. Being the only U.S. port in this regatta, there will be spectators from across the maritime world in attendance to view this magnificent fleet.
